TGV stands for Train a grande vitesse (high-speed train), a rail and transit abbreviation.
French high-speed rail service operated by SNCF, running at up to 320 km/h (199 mph) on dedicated lines. The first TGV line opened between Paris and Lyon in 1981.
Example: The TGV from Paris to Marseille takes just over three hours.
Usage notes
A modified TGV set the world speed record for conventional wheeled trains, 574.8 km/h (357 mph), in April 2007. Many TGV services are now branded "TGV inOui," with the budget brand Ouigo alongside. The TGV network made rail competitive with air travel on many routes within France.
