T&S stands for Type and screen, a laboratory test abbreviation.

Blood bank order that determines the patient's ABO group and Rh(D) type and screens the plasma for unexpected red cell antibodies. It is drawn before surgery, delivery or any situation in which transfusion might become necessary, so that compatible blood can be issued quickly.

Example: Pre-op: T&S drawn; patient is O positive, antibody screen negative.

Usage notes

Also written T+S or "type and screen". If the screen detects an antibody, the lab must identify it and find antigen-negative units, which can take hours, so early ordering matters. For patients transfused or pregnant within the previous three months, the sample is usually valid for only three days because new antibodies can form.
