SGPT stands for Serum glutamic-pyruvic transaminase, a laboratory test abbreviation.
Older name for ALT, the liver-specific enzyme, still common on laboratory printouts in India, Pakistan and other countries and in many patient discussions online. The enzyme transfers an amino group from alanine to alpha-ketoglutarate, producing pyruvate and glutamate.
Example: SGPT 120 on the health checkup; doctor advised a hepatitis panel and ultrasound.
Usage notes
SGPT and ALT are identical tests with identical reference ranges, so patients searching for "SGPT high" are reading a raised ALT. The name change followed recommendations of the International Union of Biochemistry on enzyme naming. Both SGPT and SGOT are typically reported in units per liter.
