SPX stands for Standard & Poor's 500 Index (ticker symbol), a stock market & investing abbreviation.
Ticker symbol for the S&P 500 index itself, used by trading platforms, data terminals and especially options traders. SPX options, listed on Cboe, are cash-settled and European-style, unlike options on ETFs that track the index.
Example: He sold SPX puts expiring Friday to collect premium ahead of the jobs report.
Usage notes
SPX should not be confused with SPY, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust, a fund that trades like a stock and pays dividends. SPX options now expire every trading day, and in the US they receive Section 1256 tax treatment (60 percent long-term, 40 percent short-term). Some platforms show the index as ^GSPC or .INX instead.
