SOHC stands for Single overhead camshaft, an automotive abbreviation.
Engine design with one camshaft per cylinder head operating both intake and exhaust valves, often via rocker arms. SOHC engines are simpler and more compact than DOHC designs.
Example: The SOHC V6 in the old Odyssey is simple and easy to work on.
Usage notes
SOHC engines were common from the 1970s through the 2000s, including many Honda and Ford engines. Honda's VTEC system was used on several SOHC engines. Most manufacturers have moved to DOHC designs for efficiency and emissions reasons, though SOHC remains in some engines with three or four valves per cylinder.
