SOFA stands for Status of forces agreement, a military term abbreviation.
Agreement between a host country and a foreign nation stationing troops there, setting out legal jurisdiction, taxes, entry requirements and other rules governing the visiting forces.
Example: Under the SOFA, the US military retained jurisdiction over the sailor's case.
Usage notes
The United States has SOFAs with more than 100 countries, including Japan, South Korea and Germany. The 2008 US-Iraq agreement required American forces to withdraw by the end of 2011. Crimes involving service members abroad often spark debate over SOFA terms.
