slip op. stands for Slip opinion, a legal citation abbreviation.
Individual opinion released by a court on the day of decision, before it receives a page in a reporter. Citations give the docket number, court and exact date, and pinpoint to pages of the slip, as in "slip op. at 7".
Example: The Court's ruling is cited as Doe v. United States, No. 22-123, slip op. at 9 (U.S. June 1, 2023).
Usage notes
Supreme Court slip opinions are posted on the Court's website and later replaced by preliminary prints and bound U.S. Reports volumes. Pagination changes when an opinion is published, so careful briefs update their pinpoint citations. New York uses its own "Slip Op" public citation for opinions released online.
