S.W.3d stands for South Western Reporter, Third Series, a legal citation abbreviation.
Appellate decisions from Arkansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Tennessee and Texas appear in this series, begun in 1999. Texas's many intermediate courts of appeals and its two high courts contribute a large share of its cases.
Example: Cite the Houston decision as 600 S.W.3d 100 (Tex. App.—Houston [14th Dist.] 2020, pet. denied).
Usage notes
The South Western Reporter began in 1886. Texas citation practice, governed by the Texas Rules of Form (the "Greenbook"), adds petition history such as "pet. denied" to courts of appeals decisions. Texas stopped publishing official reports in the 1960s, so S.W.3d is the standard source for its cases.
