SLCP stands for Short-lived climate pollutant, an environmental abbreviation.
Climate-warming substance that stays in the atmosphere for days to a few decades, much shorter than carbon dioxide. The main SLCPs are methane, black carbon (soot), tropospheric ozone and some HFCs; cutting them quickly slows near-term warming and improves air quality.
Example: Cutting SLCP emissions could avoid about 0.5 °C of warming by mid-century, according to UN studies.
Usage notes
Methane lasts about 12 years in the atmosphere and black carbon only days to weeks, compared with centuries for much of CO2. The Climate and Clean Air Coalition was founded in 2012 to target SLCPs, and the 2021 Global Methane Pledge aims to cut methane emissions 30% from 2020 levels by 2030.
