CategoriesScience & Engineering

REDD+ stands for Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, an environmental abbreviation.

Framework under the UN climate convention that pays developing countries for keeping forests standing and reducing forest-related emissions. The "plus" adds conservation, sustainable forest management and enhancement of forest carbon stocks.

Example: Norway pledged results-based REDD+ payments for verified reductions in Amazon deforestation.

Usage notes

The concept emerged at climate talks in 2005 and was finalized in the Warsaw Framework in 2013. Forest carbon credits sold in voluntary markets under REDD+ labels have faced criticism for overstated baselines and weak permanence. Deforestation and land-use change account for roughly a tenth of global CO2 emissions.
