1. Sine (sin)

The trigonometric function that gives, in a right triangle, the ratio of the side opposite an angle to the hypotenuse. On the unit circle, sin θ is the y-coordinate of the point at angle θ, and its graph is the familiar sine wave.
Example: sin 30° = 0.5, so the opposite side is half the hypotenuse.
The word comes from Latin sinus ("fold" or "bay"), a mistranslation of an Arabic term that itself came from Sanskrit jya, "bowstring". Sine waves describe sound, alternating current and light. Calculators must be in the right angle mode: sin 30 is 0.5 in degrees but about −0.988 in radians.
