SIE stands for Securities Industry Essentials Exam, a professional certification abbreviation.
Entry-level FINRA exam, introduced in October 2018, that tests basic knowledge of securities markets, products, regulation and prohibited practices. Anyone 18 or older can take it without firm sponsorship, and passing results remain valid for four years.
Example: College students take the SIE to stand out when applying for wealth management internships.
Usage notes
The SIE is a corequisite for representative exams such as the Series 7. Its 75 scored questions cover capital markets, products and risks, trading and customer accounts, and regulatory framework. Passing the SIE alone does not allow a person to sell securities.
