SemVer stands for Semantic Versioning, a programming abbreviation.
A version-numbering scheme in the form MAJOR.MINOR.PATCH, where the major number rises for breaking changes, the minor number for backward-compatible features and the patch number for bug fixes. npm, Cargo and most package ecosystems rely on it.
Example: Bumping to 3.0.0 under SemVer warns users that the API changed incompatibly.
Usage notes
Written by Tom Preston-Werner, co-founder of GitHub; version 2.0.0 of the specification was published in 2013. Version ranges such as ^1.4.0 in package.json only work if authors follow the rules. Pre-release tags such as 2.0.0-beta.1 and versions below 1.0.0 have special meanings. Calendar versioning (CalVer) is a common alternative.
