SDLC stands for Software development life cycle, a programming abbreviation.
The structured series of phases a software project passes through, typically planning, requirements, design, implementation, testing, deployment and maintenance. Waterfall, agile, spiral and V-model are different ways of organizing those phases.
Example: Security reviews now happen at every SDLC stage, not just before release.
Usage notes
The concept dates from the 1960s and 1970s, when large government and business systems needed formal project phases. "Secure SDLC" frameworks, such as Microsoft's Security Development Lifecycle, add threat modeling and security testing to each phase. The abbreviation is also expanded as systems development life cycle.
