sed stands for Stream editor, a programming abbreviation.
A Unix command-line tool that edits text as it flows through, most often to find and replace patterns, delete lines or extract sections without opening a file in an editor.
Example: Running sed -i 's/staging/production/g' config.yml swaps every occurrence in place.
Usage notes
Developed by Lee McMahon at Bell Labs in 1973 and 1974. GNU sed and the BSD sed on macOS treat options such as -i differently, a frequent reason scripts work on Linux but fail on a Mac. Its substitution syntax, s/old/new/, is also used jokingly in chat to correct typos.
