SECAM stands for Séquentiel couleur à mémoire (sequential color with memory), a consumer electronics abbreviation.
Analog color television standard developed in France and used there, in the Soviet Union, Eastern Europe and parts of Africa and the Middle East. It transmitted color information one component at a time on alternating lines.
Example: Our French VCR recorded in SECAM, so the tapes play in black and white on a PAL deck.
Usage notes
Henri de France led its development, and France launched SECAM color broadcasts in 1967. The Soviet bloc adopted it partly for political and industrial reasons. SECAM used 625 lines and 25 frames per second like PAL, making conversion relatively simple. Digital broadcasting has replaced it everywhere.
