SDWA stands for Safe Drinking Water Act, a US law abbreviation.
Authorizes the EPA to set enforceable maximum contaminant levels for public water systems and to protect underground sources of drinking water. It applies to every public system, from big-city utilities to small rural systems, but not to private wells.
Example: The utility must notify customers within 24 hours of an SDWA violation for E. coli.
Usage notes
Enacted in 1974 and strengthened in 1986 and 1996. The 2014-2015 Flint, Michigan, lead crisis led to stricter lead and copper rules. In 2024 the EPA set the first national drinking-water limits for several PFAS "forever chemicals", whose details and deadlines were later revisited.
