SCRA stands for Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, a US law abbreviation also used in the military.
Law of 2003 that protects active-duty service members in civil matters, capping interest at 6 percent on debts incurred before service, allowing them to end residential and auto leases on orders, and postponing court proceedings and foreclosures while they serve.
Example: The bank reduced the rate on his car loan to 6 percent under the SCRA.
Usage notes
It replaced the Soldiers' and Sailors' Civil Relief Act of 1940. Lenders and courts check a Defense Department database before taking default judgments against a person. Violations can be prosecuted by the Justice Department, which has reached settlements with banks over improper foreclosures on service members.
