SAVR stands for Surgical aortic valve replacement, a cardiology abbreviation.
Open-heart operation in which the diseased aortic valve is cut out and replaced with a mechanical or biological (tissue) prosthesis, using the heart-lung machine. It remains preferred for many younger patients, those needing other cardiac surgery and anatomy unsuitable for TAVR.
Example: Age 54 with bicuspid AS and a dilated aorta: SAVR with ascending aortic replacement recommended.
Usage notes
Mechanical valves last a lifetime but require lifelong warfarin; tissue valves avoid long-term anticoagulation but may degenerate after 10 to 20 years, after which a "valve-in-valve" TAVR is an option. The Ross procedure, which uses the patient's own pulmonary valve, is an alternative in young adults. Smaller, minimally invasive incisions are increasingly common.
