1. Security Assertion Markup Language
Technology & Computing · Cybersecurity Abbreviations
An XML-based standard for exchanging authentication and authorization data between an identity provider and a service provider, widely used for enterprise single sign-on to web applications such as Salesforce and Slack.
Example: Upload the IdP metadata XML so the app can validate SAML assertions from Okta.
Developed by the OASIS standards consortium; SAML 2.0, published in 2005, is the version in use. A signed assertion tells the application who the user is and what attributes they have. Flaws in XML signature validation have caused serious vulnerabilities over the years. Newer apps often prefer OpenID Connect, which uses JSON instead of XML. Pronounced "sam-el".
2. Samuel (Saml.)
Writing & Everyday · Given Name Abbreviations
Colonial and 19th-century clerks shortened Samuel this way in records, ledgers, receipts and signatures, often raising the final letters above the line as a mark of contraction.
Example: Received of Saml. Brooks the sum of four pounds, ten shillings, in full payment.
Scribes kept the first and last letters of a name and dropped the middle, a technique called contraction, sometimes marking it with a superscript. Samuel was especially common among New England Puritans, who favored Old Testament names. Similar forms include Danl. (Daniel) and Nathl. (Nathaniel).
