S-Bahn stands for Stadtschnellbahn (city rapid railway), a rail and transit abbreviation.
Suburban and urban rail network in German-speaking cities such as Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Vienna and Zurich, running frequent trains through city centers and out to the suburbs. Stations are marked with a white S on a green circle.
Example: Take the S-Bahn to the airport; it leaves every ten minutes from the Hauptbahnhof.
Usage notes
The term is commonly explained as short for Schnellbahn or Stadtschnellbahn. S-Bahn systems share tracks with other trains in many places, unlike U-Bahn lines. Berlin's S-Bahn ring line circles the city center. Similar networks exist in Copenhagen and other European cities.
