RER stands for Réseau express régional (Regional Express Network), a rail and transit abbreviation.

Network of five commuter rail lines (A to E) linking Paris with its suburbs and running through tunnels across the city center. The RER B connects central Paris with Charles de Gaulle Airport.

Example: Take RER B from Gare du Nord to CDG, but watch your bags in the crowds.

Usage notes

Operated jointly by RATP and SNCF. The RER A, opened in stages from 1969, is one of the busiest rail lines in Europe. RER trains stop less often than the Metro inside Paris. Brussels and Montreal have adopted the RER concept or name for regional networks.
