S-2 stands for Intelligence staff section, a military term abbreviation.
Battalion or brigade staff office responsible for intelligence: analyzing the enemy and terrain, managing collection, briefing threats and handling security clearances. Its chief is called the S-2.
Example: The S-2 assessed that the enemy would most likely defend the bridge.
Usage notes
The same function is the G-2 at division and corps and the J-2 on a joint staff. Intelligence staff officers lead intelligence preparation of the battlefield (IPB) during planning. In some units the S-2 also runs physical and personnel security programs.
