RVSP stands for Right ventricular systolic pressure, a cardiology abbreviation.
Echocardiographic estimate of the pressure in the right ventricle during contraction, calculated from the tricuspid regurgitation jet velocity plus estimated right atrial pressure. Without pulmonary valve obstruction it equals pulmonary artery systolic pressure.
Example: RVSP estimated at 62 mmHg; refer for right heart catheterization to confirm pulmonary hypertension.
Usage notes
The calculation uses the simplified Bernoulli equation, four times the velocity squared, then adds right atrial pressure estimated from the IVC. A peak TR velocity above 2.8 m/s raises suspicion of pulmonary hypertension, but echo estimates can be inaccurate and the diagnosis requires right heart catheterization. RVSP rises naturally with age and obesity.
