RTI stands for Response to intervention, a K-12 education abbreviation.
Multi-tier approach in which schools screen all students, provide increasingly intensive instruction to those who struggle (Tier 2 small groups and Tier 3 individual intervention) and monitor progress with data. IDEA 2004 allowed schools to use RTI data to help identify learning disabilities.
Example: Based on RTI data, she moved from Tier 2 to Tier 3 reading support.
Usage notes
Also written RtI. RTI focuses mainly on academic skills, while PBIS covers behavior; MTSS combines both. Federal guidance warns that RTI cannot be used to delay or deny a special education evaluation when parents request one.
