1. Parent Teacher Association
Education & Academia · K-12 Education Abbreviations · also used in organizations
Volunteer organization of parents, teachers and staff at a school that raises funds, runs events and advocates for students. Local PTAs belong to their state PTA and to the National PTA, founded in 1897 as the National Congress of Mothers.
Example: The PTA bake sale raised $1,800 for new library books.
National PTA charges membership dues and lobbies on federal education policy. Groups that are not affiliated with the national organization usually call themselves a PTO. Founders Alice McLellan Birney and Phoebe Apperson Hearst launched the movement in Washington, DC.
2. Peritonsillar abscess
Medical · Ophthalmology & ENT Abbreviations
Collection of pus beside a tonsil, the most common deep neck infection in adolescents and young adults, causing severe one-sided sore throat, difficulty opening the mouth, muffled "hot potato" voice and a uvula pushed to the opposite side.
Example: Left PTA with trismus and uvular deviation; needle aspiration 4 mL pus, start clindamycin.
Also called quinsy. Treatment is drainage by needle aspiration or incision plus antibiotics, and tonsillectomy may be offered for recurrent cases. Imaging is used when diagnosis is uncertain. In cardiology PTA means percutaneous transluminal angioplasty, and in audiology pure-tone average.
3. Physical therapist assistant
Medical · Healthcare Credential Abbreviations
Licensed or certified clinician who provides physical therapy treatments under the direction and supervision of a physical therapist, following the PT's plan of care. Entry requires an associate degree from a CAPTE-accredited program and passing the PTA exam.
Example: PTA progressed gait training per PT plan; PT re-evaluation due Friday.
PTAs do not perform initial evaluations or change the plan of care. Supervision rules vary by state and payer; from 2025 Medicare allows general rather than direct supervision of PTAs in private practice, matching institutional settings. In cardiology PTA means percutaneous transluminal angioplasty, and in documentation prior to admission.
4. Prior to admission
Medical · Medical Documentation Abbreviations
Phrase describing events, symptoms or medications from before the patient was admitted to hospital, especially the home medication list. It separates pre-hospital information from inpatient care.
Example: PTA meds: metformin 1000 mg BID, lisinopril 20 mg daily, atorvastatin 40 mg.
Medication reconciliation compares PTA medications with inpatient and discharge orders to prevent omissions and duplications. EMS reports use the same phrase for care given "prior to arrival". In rehabilitation PTA means physical therapist assistant, and in neurology post-traumatic amnesia.
5. Percutaneous transluminal angioplasty
Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations
Balloon dilation of a narrowed artery or vein through a catheter inserted via a needle puncture, used in leg arteries, kidney arteries, dialysis access and other vessels outside the heart. Stents or drug-coated balloons are often added.
Example: Right superficial femoral artery PTA with a drug-coated balloon; ABI improved from 0.6 to 0.9.
When performed on coronary arteries the procedure is called PTCA or PCI. Interventional radiologists, vascular surgeons and interventional cardiologists all perform PTA. Charles Dotter pioneered catheter dilation of arteries in 1964, and balloon catheters were refined by Andreas Grüntzig in the 1970s. In schools PTA means parent-teacher association.
6. Pure-tone average
Medical · Ophthalmology & ENT Abbreviations
Average of a person's hearing thresholds at key speech frequencies, usually 500, 1,000 and 2,000 Hz, calculated from an audiogram and expressed in decibels hearing level (dB HL). It summarizes the degree of hearing loss in each ear.
Example: PTA right 45 dB HL, left 20 dB HL; SRT agrees within 5 dB.
Some definitions add 4,000 Hz for a four-frequency average. The pure-tone average should match the speech reception threshold within about 10 dB; a mismatch can signal test error or nonorganic hearing loss. Categories such as mild, moderate and severe loss are assigned from it. In ENT surgery PTA usually means peritonsillar abscess.
7. Patent term adjustment
Law & Legal · Intellectual Property Abbreviations
Extension of a US patent's term to compensate for USPTO delays during examination, such as failing to issue a first office action within 14 months of filing. The number of days added is printed on the face of the patent.
Example: The patent's PTA of 412 days pushes its expiration into 2041.
Governed by 35 U.S.C. § 154(b), with separate categories for missed examination deadlines (A delay), total pendency over three years (B delay) and delays from appeals and other proceedings (C delay). Delays caused by the applicant reduce the adjustment. In schools, PTA means parent-teacher association.
