1. Platelet-rich plasma
Medical · Musculoskeletal & Rheumatology Abbreviations
Concentrate of the patient's own platelets, prepared by spinning a blood sample in a centrifuge, that is injected into tendons, joints or skin to promote healing. It is used for tennis elbow, knee osteoarthritis, other tendinopathies, hair loss and cosmetic procedures.
Example: Chronic lateral epicondylitis failed PT; ultrasound-guided PRP injection, self-pay.
Evidence varies by condition and preparation method, with the best support for lateral epicondylitis and knee osteoarthritis. The FDA clears centrifuge devices but has not approved PRP for specific conditions, so insurers often do not cover it. Platelet counts and white cell content differ widely between systems. In ophthalmology PRP means panretinal photocoagulation.
2. Panretinal photocoagulation
Medical · Ophthalmology & ENT Abbreviations
Laser treatment that places hundreds to thousands of small burns across the peripheral retina to reduce its oxygen demand and make abnormal new blood vessels regress. It is the long-standing treatment for proliferative diabetic retinopathy.
Example: PRP OS, 1,400 spots, session 1 of 2; discussed reduced night and side vision.
The Diabetic Retinopathy Study (1976) established PRP's benefit. Side effects include loss of peripheral and night vision and worsening of macular edema. Anti-VEGF injections are an alternative for reliable patients. In sports medicine and dermatology PRP means platelet-rich plasma.
