RSO stands for Registered student organization, an academic abbreviation.
Club or group officially recognized by a university, giving it access to campus rooms, funding, websites and recruitment fairs. Recognition requires a constitution, officers and usually a faculty or staff adviser.
Example: The chess club became an RSO, so it can now reserve rooms and apply for funding.
Usage notes
Some universities use RSO for registered groups and reserve a different label for sponsored ones. Large universities may have more than a thousand RSOs. Public universities must apply recognition rules neutrally under First Amendment case law.
