Framework that combines quantum mechanics with special relativity by treating particles as excitations of underlying fields that fill space. QFT is the language of the Standard Model of particle physics and also describes many phenomena in condensed matter physics.
Example: In QFT, an electron is a ripple in the electron field, and photons are ripples in the electromagnetic field.
Quantum electrodynamics, developed in the 1940s, was the first complete QFT. Mathematical techniques called renormalization tame the infinities that appear in calculations. Gravity has resisted a consistent QFT description, which motivates string theory and loop quantum gravity.
