1. Quantum chromodynamics

Science & Engineering · Physics Abbreviations

Theory of the strong nuclear force, which binds quarks together into protons, neutrons and other hadrons through the exchange of gluons. Quarks carry a "color" charge, red, green or blue, unrelated to visual color, and are never observed alone, a property called confinement.

Example: Lattice QCD calculations now reproduce the proton's mass from first principles.

David Gross, Frank Wilczek and David Politzer shared the 2004 Nobel Prize for discovering asymptotic freedom, the weakening of the strong force at very short distances. Most of the mass of ordinary matter comes not from the Higgs mechanism but from QCD binding energy inside protons and neutrons. Murray Gell-Mann proposed quarks in 1964.

2. Qualified charitable distribution

Business & Finance · Tax Abbreviations

Direct transfer from an IRA to a qualified charity by an owner aged 70½ or older, excluded from taxable income and able to count toward required minimum distributions. The annual limit was $100,000 per person for many years and has been indexed to inflation since 2024.

Example: I give to my church through a QCD so the money never shows up in my AGI.

Made permanent by the PATH Act of 2015. Because the money is excluded rather than deducted, a QCD helps even donors who take the standard deduction and lowers AGI-based costs such as Medicare premium surcharges. Transfers to donor-advised funds and private foundations do not qualify.

3. Quitclaim deed

Business & Finance · Real Estate & Mortgage Abbreviations

Deed that transfers whatever ownership interest the grantor may have in a property, without any promise that the title is valid or free of claims. It is commonly used between family members, in divorces or to clear up title defects.

Example: After the divorce, he signed a QCD transferring his interest in the house to her.

A quitclaim deed does not remove anyone's name from the mortgage, so the original borrowers remain liable for the loan. Buyers paying full value generally insist on a warranty or grant deed instead. In US tax, QCD means qualified charitable distribution.
