PTIN stands for Preparer Tax Identification Number, a tax abbreviation.
Number that anyone paid to prepare or help prepare federal tax returns must obtain from the IRS and enter on the returns they prepare, in place of their own Social Security number. It must be renewed every year.
Example: Ask your preparer for their PTIN; a legitimate one will sign your return with it.
Usage notes
Required since 2011. PTINs consist of the letter P followed by eight digits. Holding one does not certify competence; credentials such as CPA, enrolled agent or attorney indicate tested qualifications.
