1. Points (basketball)
Sports · Basketball Abbreviations
Total points a player or team scores: two for a field goal inside the arc, three from beyond it and one per free throw. PTS is the first stat column most fans read in a box score.
Example: The rookie posted 40 PTS, 20 REB and 5 BLK in Tuesday's win.
LeBron James passed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's career record of 38,387 points on February 7, 2023, and became the first player to reach 40,000 in 2024. Wilt Chamberlain's 100-point game on March 2, 1962, remains the single-game record.
2. Post-thrombotic syndrome
Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations
Long-term complication of deep vein thrombosis in which damaged valves and persistent obstruction cause chronic leg pain, heaviness, swelling, skin changes and sometimes ulcers. It develops in roughly 20 to 50 percent of people within two years of a leg DVT.
Example: Two years after iliofemoral DVT, swelling and heaviness by evening; Villalta score 12, consistent with moderate PTS.
The Villalta scale is the standard tool for diagnosing and grading severity. Prompt, adequate anticoagulation lowers the risk, but the ATTRACT trial (2017) found that adding catheter-directed clot removal did not prevent PTS in most patients. Routine compression stockings for prevention are no longer universally advised after the SOX trial (2014) showed no benefit.
