Prop stands for Proposition, a political abbreviation.
Short form used for numbered ballot measures in states such as California, Arizona and Nevada, where citizens vote directly on proposed laws and constitutional amendments, as in "Prop 13".
Example: Prop 50 asked California voters in 2025 to approve new congressional district maps.
Usage notes
California's Prop 13 of 1978, which capped property tax increases, is among the best-known ballot measures in US history and inspired tax revolts in other states. Measures reach the ballot by citizen petition or by legislative referral. Other states use labels such as "Question", "Amendment", "Measure" or "Issue" instead of Prop.
