PON stands for Passive optical network, a telecom abbreviation.
Fiber-optic access network that uses unpowered optical splitters to share one fiber from the provider among many homes, typically 32 or 64. GPON and XGS-PON are the most common standards.
Example: Our provider upgraded from GPON to XGS-PON, so 2 Gbit/s plans are now available.
Usage notes
GPON, standardized by the ITU in 2003, provides 2.5 Gbit/s downstream shared among users, while XGS-PON offers 10 Gbit/s in both directions. Because splitters need no power, PONs cost less to maintain than active networks. Newer 25G and 50G PON standards are being deployed for future demand.
