PMID stands for PubMed identifier, a medical research abbreviation.
Unique number assigned to each citation in PubMed, the free database of biomedical literature run by the US National Library of Medicine. Citing the PMID lets readers locate an article quickly regardless of journal formatting.
Example: Cite the PMID so readers can pull up the abstract in PubMed directly.
Usage notes
PubMed, launched in 1996, holds more than 35 million citations, largely from MEDLINE. The PMCID is a separate identifier for free full-text articles in PubMed Central, and the DOI is a publisher-assigned link. Grant reports to the NIH must include PMCIDs for funded papers.
