PME stands for Professional military education, a military term abbreviation.
Schools and courses that develop officers and NCOs throughout their careers, from basic leader courses to command and staff colleges and war colleges. Completion of the right PME is often required for promotion.
Example: She completed enlisted PME by correspondence while deployed.
Usage notes
Officer PME includes primary, intermediate and senior levels, and Joint Professional Military Education (JPME) is required for many joint assignments. Enlisted PME includes courses such as the Army's Basic, Advanced and Senior Leader Courses and the Air Force's Airman Leadership School.
