OTH stands for Other than honorable, a military term abbreviation.

Most severe administrative discharge characterization, given for serious misconduct or security violations when a member is separated without a court-martial. It can bar many veterans benefits, depending on a VA character-of-discharge review.

Example: With an OTH discharge, he had to apply to the VA for a decision on his health care eligibility.

Usage notes

The administrative characterizations, from best to worst, are honorable, general (under honorable conditions) and other than honorable. Veterans can ask discharge review boards to upgrade their characterization, and the VA provides some mental health care to former members with OTH discharges.
