PAPI stands for Precision approach path indicator, an aviation abbreviation.
Row of usually four lights beside the runway that shows whether an approaching aircraft is on the correct glide path: two white and two red means on path, more white means high and more red means low. Most PAPIs indicate a 3-degree approach angle.
Example: Two white, two red on the PAPI all the way down made for a textbook landing.
Usage notes
Pronounced "PAP-ee." PAPIs have replaced the older VASI system at most airports because they are more precise and easier to read. Small airfields may use a two-light version (APAPI). The lights are visible for several miles in daylight and much farther at night.
