MVFR stands for Marginal visual flight rules, an aviation abbreviation.
Flight category for ceilings from 1,000 to 3,000 feet or visibility from 3 to 5 statute miles. MVFR weather is legal for visual flight but leaves little margin, so it appears as a caution color on aviation weather maps and METAR displays.
Example: Most of Ohio is reporting MVFR this morning, so plan the cross-country with a generous fuel reserve.
Usage notes
The four categories (VFR, MVFR, IFR, LIFR) are labels used by the US National Weather Service and flight-planning apps, not separate rule sets; a pilot flying in MVFR is still operating under VFR. On most US weather maps MVFR is shown in blue. ICAO weather products do not use the term.
