P2E stands for Play-to-earn, a cryptocurrency & blockchain abbreviation.
A blockchain gaming model in which players earn cryptocurrency or NFTs through gameplay that they can sell for real money. Axie Infinity was the best-known example.
Example: During the 2021 boom, some players in the Philippines made a living from P2E games.
Usage notes
Axie Infinity peaked in 2021, and in March 2022 its Ronin bridge was hacked for over $600 million, an attack the FBI attributed to North Korea's Lazarus Group. Many P2E economies collapsed once new player inflows slowed, prompting comparisons with pyramid schemes. Developers have since shifted to "play-and-earn" designs.
