1. Real-world assets
Technology & Computing · Cryptocurrency & Blockchain Abbreviations
Traditional assets such as government bonds, real estate, private credit and commodities represented as tokens on a blockchain, so they can be traded, used as collateral or held in DeFi.
Example: The fund tokenized its Treasury holdings as an RWA product that settles around the clock.
Tokenized US Treasuries grew rapidly from 2023, with products such as BlackRock's BUIDL fund, launched in 2024. Tokenization still depends on off-chain legal structures and custodians, so holders rely on traditional institutions. In banking regulation, RWA means risk-weighted assets, used to calculate capital requirements.
2. Risk-weighted assets
Business & Finance · Banking Abbreviations
Bank's assets weighted by their credit, market and operational risk, used as the denominator of regulatory capital ratios. Cash held at a central bank may carry a 0 percent weight, while an unsecured corporate loan typically carries 100 percent.
Example: Selling the leveraged loan book cut RWA by $15 billion and lifted the bank's capital ratio.
Banks calculate RWAs either with standardized weights set by regulators or, for large banks, with approved internal models. The final Basel III reforms, sometimes called Basel IV, limit how far internal-model RWAs can fall below standardized ones through an "output floor" of 72.5 percent. Shrinking RWAs is a common way to raise capital ratios.
