1. Statute of limitations
Law & Legal · Litigation Abbreviations
Law setting the deadline for filing a lawsuit or bringing criminal charges, measured from when the claim accrues or the offense occurs. Once it runs, the claim is generally barred regardless of its merits.
Example: The two-year SOL on her negligence claim ran out before she contacted a lawyer.
Periods vary by claim and state: personal injury commonly two or three years, written contracts often four to six. The discovery rule may delay accrual until the injury was or should have been discovered, and tolling can pause the clock, for example for minors. Murder has no limitations period in nearly every state. A statute of repose sets an outer limit regardless of discovery.
2. Solution (sol)
Medical · Pharmacy Abbreviations
Liquid preparation in which the drug is completely dissolved in water, alcohol or another solvent, giving a uniform concentration without shaking. Oral solutions, ophthalmic solutions, injectable solutions and topical solutions are all common.
Example: Levetiracetam 100 mg/mL oral sol, give 5 mL BID via G-tube.
Also written "soln". Solutions are absorbed faster than solid forms because the drug is already dissolved. Look-alike concentrations are a hazard: oral morphine solution comes as 10 mg/5 mL and as a 100 mg/5 mL concentrate, and confusing them has caused fatal overdoses.
3. Solana
Technology & Computing · Cryptocurrency & Blockchain Abbreviations
The native token of Solana, a high-throughput blockchain that combines proof of stake with a timekeeping technique called proof of history and is known for low fees and fast confirmations. SOL pays transaction fees and is staked to secure the network.
Example: Swapping on a Solana exchange costs a fraction of a cent in SOL.
Solana was founded by Anatoly Yakovenko, and its mainnet beta launched in March 2020. The network suffered several outages in 2021 and 2022 but grew into a hub for meme coins, NFTs and payments. The 2022 collapse of FTX, an early backer, hit SOL's price hard. In texting slang SOL has an unrelated, mildly vulgar meaning.
4. S*** out of luck
Texting & Internet Slang · Texting and Chat Abbreviations
Describes being in a hopeless situation with no options left, as in "missed the last train, so I'm sol." Common in American slang, including military and workplace talk.
Example: Missed the last train, so I'm sol until morning.
Mildly vulgar but widely understood. In astronomy "sol" is a day on Mars, and in Latin it means sun, contexts the sentence usually makes obvious. Avoid it in professional writing.
