OROS stands for Osmotic-controlled release oral delivery system, a pharmacy abbreviation.
Tablet technology in which water entering through a semipermeable shell pushes drug out of a laser-drilled hole at a steady rate. Concerta (methylphenidate) and Procardia XL use OROS-type systems.
Example: Concerta 36 mg each morning; the empty OROS shell may appear in stool.
Usage notes
Patients are often alarmed to find the intact "ghost tablet" in their stool, which is normal because the shell is not digested. OROS tablets should not be used in people with severe gastrointestinal narrowing because of the risk of obstruction. The technology was developed by the company ALZA.
