oint stands for Ointment, a pharmacy abbreviation.
Semisolid topical preparation with an oily base, such as petrolatum, that forms an occlusive film. Ointments increase drug penetration, protect dry or cracked skin and contain fewer preservatives than creams, but feel greasy.
Example: Mupirocin 2% oint, apply to wound TID x 7 days.
Usage notes
Ointments are often chosen for dry, thick or scaly lesions, while creams and lotions suit moist or hairy areas. The same steroid can be more potent as an ointment than as a cream because of occlusion. Ophthalmic ointments are sterile and blur vision briefly, so they are often given at bedtime.
