OMI stands for Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, a religious title abbreviation.
Missionary congregation founded in 1816 in southern France by St. Eugène de Mazenod, whose priests and brothers write OMI after their names. The Oblates became especially prominent in missions to Canada's North and to Indigenous peoples, as well as in Texas.
Example: The shrine in San Antonio is run by priests of the OMI.
Usage notes
Oblates also founded the University of Ottawa and Saint Paul University. The congregation has publicly apologized for its role in running Canadian residential schools. "Oblate" comes from Latin for "offered".
