OFM stands for Order of Friars Minor, a religious title abbreviation.
Designation of the Franciscan friars, the order founded by Francis of Assisi in 1209 to live in poverty and preach. The OFM, sometimes called the Observant Franciscans, is the largest of the three main branches of Franciscan men.
Example: Fr. Richard Rohr, OFM, founded the Center for Action and Contemplation in Albuquerque.
Usage notes
The Franciscan family also includes the Capuchins (OFM Cap.) and Conventuals (OFM Conv.), along with sisters and secular Franciscans. "Minor" means "lesser", reflecting humility. Franciscan friars traditionally wear a brown or gray habit with a knotted cord.
