Ofwat stands for Water Services Regulation Authority, a UK government abbreviation.
Economic regulator of the water and sewerage companies in England and Wales, which sets the prices they may charge, their investment plans and performance targets in five-year price reviews.
Example: Ofwat's final determination allows bills to rise by an average of 36 percent over five years.
Usage notes
Created in 1989 when the water industry was privatized, it faced growing criticism over sewage spills, leaks and company debts. Following an independent review, the government announced in 2025 that Ofwat would be abolished and its functions merged into a new water regulator. Scotland's publicly owned Scottish Water has a separate regulator.
