Created in 1992, it gave one-word overall judgments from outstanding to inadequate until 2024, when they were dropped for schools after the death of headteacher Ruth Perry raised concerns about inspection pressure; report cards were introduced as a replacement. Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own inspectorates.
