1. Nationally Registered Paramedic

Since 2013, candidates must graduate from a CAAHEP-accredited paramedic program, typically 1,200 to 1,800 hours of training. State licensure is still required to practice. In neonatal care NRP means the Neonatal Resuscitation Program, a separate course.

Course and algorithm from the American Academy of Pediatrics, with the American Heart Association, for resuscitating newborns at birth. Effective ventilation of the lungs is its central focus.
Example: NRP: positive-pressure ventilation started at 60 seconds for apnea, HR 80.
Introduced in 1987 and required for staff attending deliveries in most US hospitals. The algorithm begins with drying, warming and stimulating, followed by ventilation if needed. For EMS credentials, NRP also means Nationally Registered Paramedic.
