NCSE stands for Nonconvulsive status epilepticus, a neurology abbreviation.
Prolonged seizure activity without obvious convulsions, presenting as confusion, reduced responsiveness, subtle twitching or abnormal behavior. It is diagnosed only with EEG and is an underrecognized cause of altered mental status in hospitalized and intensive care patients.
Example: Persistent encephalopathy after convulsive seizures stopped; cEEG shows NCSE.
Usage notes
NCSE is suspected when patients fail to wake up as expected after a convulsive seizure or have unexplained fluctuating consciousness. The Salzburg consensus criteria (2013) help interpret EEG findings. Treatment intensity is balanced against risks, since aggressive anesthesia can be harmful in elderly or frail patients.
